Con trece a\u00f1os, mientras estudiaba una pieza para banda de metales, Concierto de Aranjuez, Emma-Jean encontr\u00f3 por casualidad una versi\u00f3n de Miles Davis en una p\u00e1gina de descargas ilegales. No sab\u00eda qui\u00e9n era. Nadie en su entorno conoc\u00eda su nombre. Para aquella adolescente de West Yorkshire, Miles era simplemente \u201cese tipo\u201d que acababa de descubrir.\r\n\r\nPero aquel encuentro lo cambi\u00f3 todo.\r\n\r\nA partir de entonces empez\u00f3 a buscar sus discos, a ahorrar dinero de bolsillo para comprarlos y a escucharlos en su Discman durante largos trayectos de vuelta a casa, cuando ya no pod\u00eda permitirse pagar el autob\u00fas. Aprendi\u00f3 de o\u00eddo la melod\u00eda y el solo de Four con su trompeta, sin saber que se estaba sumergiendo, casi sin darse cuenta, en una formaci\u00f3n jazz\u00edstica esencial.\r\n\r\n<strong>Miles Davis le abri\u00f3 una puerta. Le mostr\u00f3 un mundo musical que no conoc\u00eda. Le hizo querer tocar jazz. Y, sobre todo, le hizo comprender algo decisivo: que ella tambi\u00e9n era una artista.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nPero Dear Miles - A Love Letter no es un homenaje nost\u00e1lgico. No se trata de mirar atr\u00e1s con reverencia inm\u00f3vil, sino de preguntarse qu\u00e9 har\u00eda Miles Davis si siguiera vivo hoy. \u00bfExplorar\u00eda las texturas de la m\u00fasica de baile? \u00bfImprovisar\u00eda sobre drum and bass, jungle o techno? \u00bfMezclar\u00eda cajas de ritmos con instrumentos en vivo? \u00bfRevisitar\u00eda sus cl\u00e1sicos desde la mirada de un beatmaker? \u00bfConvertir\u00eda su periodo el\u00e9ctrico en algo realmente electr\u00f3nico?\r\n\r\n<strong>Emma-Jean Thackray no pretende responder desde la imitaci\u00f3n, sino desde el esp\u00edritu. Desde esa misma actitud que defini\u00f3 a Miles: empujar los l\u00edmites, desconfiar de las normas, mezclar lenguajes que parec\u00edan incompatibles y seguir siempre el propio o\u00eddo.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nEn ese sentido, la conexi\u00f3n entre ambos va mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de las notas. Emma-Jean reconoce en Miles una forma de estar en la m\u00fasica: escuchar no solo lo que se toca, sino tambi\u00e9n la est\u00e9tica, la producci\u00f3n, la atm\u00f3sfera, la vibraci\u00f3n completa de una obra. Esa manera de pensar la m\u00fasica como un todo est\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n en el centro de su propio proceso creativo.\r\n\r\nYa en Weirdo, su extraordinario segundo \u00e1lbum publicado en Brownswood, el sello de Gilles Peterson, Emma-Jean Thackray demostr\u00f3 una capacidad poco com\u00fan para habitar todos los roles a la vez: tocar todos los instrumentos, escribir, cantar, arreglar, producir, grabar y mezclar desde su propio espacio \u00edntimo.
